Taiwan’s coastguard said it detained eight mainland Chinese crew members of a cargo ship suspected of damaging an undersea communication cable on February 25, 2025. The Togo-registered Hong Tai was intercepted and escorted to Taiwan after it dropped anchor in the area near the cable connecting Penghu Island – an archipelago west of Taiwan – and around the time the link was damaged. The coastguard provided few details other than saying all crew members were mainland Chinese nationals and that the vessel “has a history of mainland Chinese financing”. The mainland’s Taiwan Affairs Office has responded by accusing the island’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party of blowing the incident out of proportion.
