Travellers trickle through checkpoint as Hong Kong-mainland China border reopens

Eager travellers descended on newly reopened border checkpoints between Hong Kong and mainland China early on January 8, 2023, as they headed to family reunions or made business trips for the first time in three years without the need to quarantine. The Lok Ma Chau spur line checkpoint saw a steady outflow of travellers from Hong Kong as regular train services moved passengers to the border, but there appeared to be far fewer arrivals coming to the city from mainland China.
