Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam says meeting with chief justice is ‘legitimate and proper’

Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam defended her meeting with the city’s head of the judiciary after local media reported that she had a one-to-one meeting with Andrew Cheung. They met just days before Cheung’s first case as chief justice: a bail hearing for Hong Kong publisher and opposition activist Jimmy Lai Chee-ying. Speaking to the press on February 2, 2021, Lam said it was her duty to meet the chief justice and that they did not discuss any cases. She added that she was “obliged to uphold the independence of the judiciary” and such meetings were “normal”.
