Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam emphasises national security law as Tiananmen anniversary nears

Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor reiterated the city’s national security law at a press conference on June 1, 2021, three days before the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square crackdown. She emphasised that citizens have “mutual responsibilities to uphold the unity of sovereignty and territorial integrity”. Hong Kong police have already banned the annual June 4 vigil for the second year in a row, citing Covid-19 social distancing concerns. In the past, the candlelight vigil drew tens of thousands of people in what was the only large-scale commemoration of the crackdown on Chinese soil.
