Beijing tells Hong Kong leader to ‘seriously implement’ overhaul of city’s electoral system

Chinese Vice-Premier Han Zheng has urged Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam to “seriously implement” Beijing’s plan to overhaul the city’s electoral system. Han described the changes as part of a “battle” to defend rule of law in Hong Kong against subversion. The two met in Beijing on March 6, 2021, after the National People’s Congress (NPC) detailed its proposal for reforming Hong Kong’s electoral systems to ensure that “patriots” govern the city.
