Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor said she did not regret “restoring” the city from a year of anti-government protests that began in June 2019. Speaking on December 1, 2020, ahead of her weekly cabinet meeting, the chief executive described the protests as “chaos” and “riots” that threatened China’s national security. In June 2020, authorities on the Chinese mainland enacted a sweeping national security law for Hong Kong that has been criticised for its broad language criminalising acts of secession, subversion, terrorism and collusion with external forces.
