People gathered in London on June 12, 2022, to mark the third anniversary of a key confrontation in Hong Kong that many consider to the be event that sparked months of sometimes violent mass protests in the city. Hongkongers who took to the streets in June 2019 were protesting against a later-withdrawn anti-extradition bill that would have allowed prisoners in the city to be sent to mainland China. The June 12 gathering in London, organised under the theme “be water, be united”, was held outside the British Parliament. According to London-based fugitive activist and former opposition lawmaker Nathan Law Kwun-chung, 4,000 rallied at Parliament Square to unite Hongkongers in Britain in “fighting for democracy and safeguarding freedom”.
