Hong Kong’s leader said on November 28, 2022, that he would seek an interpretation of the city’s national security law from the National People’s Congress Standing Committee, after the city’s top court upheld a decision allowing a British barrister to defend jailed media tycoon Jimmy Lai Chee-ying against charges of collusion with foreign forces. John Lee Ka-chiu has instructed Hong Kong’s justice secretary to apply for an adjournment of Lai's trial, which was originally expected to start on December 1.
