Hong Kong opposition activist Agnes Chow and Apple Daily founder Jimmy Lai released on bail

Jimmy Lai Chee-ying, the founder of Hong Kong tabloid-style newspaper Apple Daily, was released on bail in the early hours of August 12, 2020, more than 40 hours after he was arrested. Police also released 23-year-old political activist Agnes Chow Ting just before midnight. They were among 10 people arrested under a new national security law imposed in the city by Beijing on June 30. Chow called her arrest “political prosecution”. The others in the group arrested in an August 10 police operation – including Lai’s two sons, several staff members at Apple Daily and a freelance journalist – were released one by one throughout the evening of August 12.
