Hong Kong media tycoon Jimmy Lai Chee-ying's national security trial began on December 18, 2023, more than three years after he was arrested. He is accused of conducting an anti-China campaign buoyed by foreign powers. The 76-year-old Apple Daily founder, an outspoken Beijing critic and anti-government activist, is the most prominent figure to be prosecuted under the national security law imposed on Hong Kong by Beijing in 2020 to ban acts of secession, subversion, terrorism and collusion with foreign forces. The trial is expected to last 80 days.
