Since the start of Hong Kong’s fifth wave of Covid-19 infections in December 2021, at least 70 foreign domestic workers have been left homeless after testing positive for the coronavirus, according to local migrant workers’ rights groups. Among them is “Mina”, who became homeless after being fired from her job on February 26, 2022. She is now staying at a temporary shelter provided by the local NGO, HELP for Domestic Workers. With support from volunteers and partners, the group has set up four temporary isolation centres around the city, supplying food, medicine and clothing. Volunteer Julie Koo says Hong Kong must recognise the contribution of migrant workers to the community by helping them during these difficult times.
