China will defend “fairness and justice” and contribute to global development together with Russia, Chinese President Xi Jinping told his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. The two leaders held talks on the sidelines of the Belt and Road Forum in Beijing on October 18, 2023. It was Putin’s first trip to the Chinese capital since China and Russia declared a “no-limits” partnership days before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, and the first since the start of the Israel-Hamas war. Speaking to reporters after the three-hour meeting, the Russian leader said the two sides discussed Ukraine and the conflict in the Middle East.
