Opera singers in Taiwan are devising ways to keep traditional Hakka opera alive on the island as its popularity wanes. The fading art form, usually performed at religious festivals, dates back to the late Qing dynasty. The Hakka dialect is not widely spoken on the island due to its dwindling ethnic population. To attract a larger audience, the troupe is incorporating more modern elements into performances, such as street-dance sequences, fire acts and acrobatics.
