Taiwan’s coastguard has arrested a mainland Chinese man who drove his speedboat directly to a ferry pier outside Taipei on June 9, 2024. The incident has raised security concerns on the island. The 60-year-old man, who claimed to be a former mainland Chinese navy captain, was detained after he arrived at the pier off the coast of Tamsui district in New Taipei City. After entering the Tamsui River, which leads to downtown Taipei, the boat hit a ferry at the pier, according to the local coastguard. The suspect said he fled to Taiwan from Ningde port in the mainland coastal city of Fuzhou on June 8 after being persecuted by mainland authorities for “making improper statements”. Taiwan authorities have cast doubt on the man’s claims, calling the incident a serious security lapse.
