The South Pacific island state of Tuvalu has reaffirmed its ties with Taiwan following the swearing in of its new prime minister, Feleti Teo. The pledge followed calls from some officials to review its diplomatic ties with Taiwan, which currently has three remaining allies in the Pacific. Neighbouring Naura switched recognition from Taipei to Beijing in January 2024.

But in his first public statement about the issue, Teo said his government is focused on Tuvalu’s development rather than on debates about its Taiwan relations.
