Seventeen bodies of victims allegedly tortured and killed by Myanmar’s ruling junta were recovered in the central region of Sagaing on March 2, 2023. A leader from the National Unity Government accused the military of committing war crimes in the countryside. The country has been embroiled in a bloody civil war for over two years since the military staged a coup in 2021. The United Nations has accused the ruling junta of creating a “perpetual human rights crisis”.
