Rescuers continued the desperate search for survivors days after a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck Myanmar on March 28, 2025. The confirmed death toll had risen to more than 2,700 as of April 1, according to the Myanmar government. The powerful quake also brought down a 30-storey tower under construction in neighbouring Thailand. However, authorities are investigating why the building was the only major structure in Bangkok to collapse, amid concerns over shoddy building materials and allegations of corruption in the nation’s construction industry linked to Chinese contractors.
