US President Joe Biden began his widely anticipated Asia trip on May 19, 2022, his first presidential trip to the region. Arriving in Seoul before travelling onwards to Tokyo, Biden began the trip with an emphasis on trade. White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan said on May 18 that apart from addressing security issues in the region, Biden will unveil an ambitious economic initiative for Asia: the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework or IPEF. The new initiative aims to tackle emerging economic challenges, including the digital economy and infrastructure building.
