Myanmar coup leader Min Aung Hlaing held the first meeting of his military government on February 2, 2021, the day after the army detained elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi. Senior General Min Aung Hlaing said the military’s move to take power was inevitable since the ousted party had rejected army claims of irregularities in the November 2020 election that Suu Kyi’s party won in a landslide.
