Massive 180-million-year-old ‘sea dragon’ fossil unearthed in England

The fossil of a 180-million-year-old dinosaur has been discovered at the Rutland Water reservoir in England. The skeleton measures 10 metres (33ft) long and its skull alone weighs more than 1 tonne (2,204lbs). The remains are considered the largest and most complete of an ichthyosaur ever unearthed in the UK. The prehistoric reptile is informally known as a “sea dragon” because of its large eyes and teeth. The discovery was made in February 2021 during routine draining of a lagoon island at the reservoir in the East Midlands. Officials from the Anglian Water and the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust  revealed the find to the public on January 10, 2022.
