Germany’s Social Democrats win election, chancellor candidate Scholz celebrated by his supporters

Germany’s Social Democratic Party (SPD) narrowly won the most votes in national elections on September 26, 2021, with the party headed by Olaf Scholz taking 25.7 per cent of the vote. The 63-year-old said the SPD is a “pragmatic party that knows how to govern”. Outgoing Chancellor Angela Merkel’s centre-right CDU-CSU bloc, and its  candidate to succeed her, Armin Laschet, came second with 24.1 per cent of the votes, the alliance’s worst showing in its seven-decade history. Both the SPD and the CDU-CSU bloc are seeking to form governing coalitions in a race for power. Smaller parties such as the Greens and liberal Free Democrats (FDP) are likely to be involved in forming the new government.
