Kiteboarding in Hong Kong: ‘when you fly, you’re in a different world’

Colourful kites glide in the sky and boards zip along the water. It’s a windy afternoon on Shui Hau beach in south Lantau, one of Hong Kong's longest beaches and one of the best sites for kiteboarding.

Kiteboarding, also known as kitesurfing, is a sport that combines aspects of wakeboarding, surfing, snowboarding and paragliding. Participants harness the wind’s power using a large controllable power kite that is propelled across the water on a board similar to a wakeboard or a small surfboard.

Having tried many watersports, Davy Tang, an instructor at the Hong Kong Kiteboarding School, said kiteboarding is easier as it is fast and exciting, yet doesn’t require a full-body workout.
