A globally endangered duck has been spotted in Hong Kong for the first time in the city’s known birdwatching history. The scaly-sided merganser, known for its crest of wispy elongated feathers, was seen in Hong Kong’s New Territories, in mid-January 2023. Thrilled birdwatchers said its arrival may have been due to the improving environment around the city’s reservoirs.
