The Hong Kong government on September 4, 2023, opened a seven-hectare park on part of the 32 hectares of land authorities recently took back from the Hong Kong Golf Club which had leased the property for use at the Fanling golf course. When site was still managed by the club, people from the nearby village of Sheung Shui were allowed to play golf there. With the status of such arrangements left unclear after the government reclaimed the land, more than 10 Sheung Shui villagers entered the area on the day of the park opening to play golf. Park managers with the Leisure and Cultural Services Department asked the group to leave, but the golfers continued to play for about 30 minutes.
