Four police boats could be seen forming a circle in the water next to the Tai Lam Marine Police Base on September 27, 2021, as part of a final farewell for senior inspector Lam Yuen-yee, who died during an anti-smuggling operation. The body of the 37-year-old was found two days after she went missing in waters off Sha Chau on September 25, when the high-speed boat she and three other marine officers were in was rammed by a smuggler’s boat. Dozens of police officers lined the pier to pay their respects as a van carrying Lam’s body left the base in Tuen Mun. The police vessel capsized after it was rammed by the smuggler’s boat, trapping the officers underneath. Two managed to swim to the surface while a third was rescued without suffering major injuries. Police, firefighters and helicopters were deployed in the search for the missing officer.
