The world’s largest penguin species, the emperor penguin, has seen the first major breeding failure, with several colonies reportedly having had no chicks survive in 2022. Researchers said the enormous sea-ice loss around the Antarctic Peninsula has killed thousands of chicks in five analysed colonies in 2022, according to a new study published in Nature’s Communications Earth & Environment. Scientists are still trying to untangle the reasons why, but many point to human-caused global warming as a major driver.
