Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said he raised concerns about cyberspying against the Netherlands with Chinese President Xi Jinping when the two leaders met in Beijing on March 27, 2024. It was the first time the Netherlands has publicly attributed such espionage to China, amid tensions over the Netherlands’ export curbs on chip-making technology to the country. Rutte, who is about to leave his post and is tipped to become the next head of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (Nato), said Dutch curbs do not target any specific country and he insisted the move has not affected bilateral economic ties.
