Northeast China evacuates over 1,200 residents as Typhoon Khanun threatens the region

China’s northeast province of Heilongjiang has evacuated more than 1,200 residents along the Songhua River, which is at risk of flooding. Dozens of rivers in the province have already exceeded water level warnings after heavy rain brought on by an earlier storm. But the expected arrival of Typhoon Khanun in the region on August 10, 2023, has prompted warnings from authorities that disaster-relief efforts were likely to be “demanding and not optimistic”.
