South Korea’s former defence minister Kim Yong-hyun, who was accused of playing a lead role in the failed imposition of martial law on December 3, 2024, has attempted suicide inside a detention centre, a justice ministry official told parliament. Shin Yong-hae, commissioner general of the Korea Correctional Service, told lawmakers on December 11 that Kim tried to kill himself at the facility in Seoul. He said the suicide attempt failed and Kim was in a stable condition. Kim was taken into custody earlier in the day after a Seoul court approved a warrant for his arrest on allegations he played a key role in a rebellion and for abuse of power.
