South Korea’s Constitutional Court formally removed president Yoon Suk-yeol from office on April 4, 2025. The ruling came months after Yoon was impeached by the country’s parliament over his attempt to declare martial law on December 3, 2024. In a unanimous decision, the constitutional justices said Yoon had “damaged people’s political rights” and that his martial law order was unjustified. His removal as president is effective immediately as the country prepares to hold snap elections in the next 60 days. Anti-Yoon protesters cheered while his supporters reacted with dismay when they learned about the verdict.
