Australia passed into law on November 28, 2024, a social media ban for children aged under 16. It came after a debate that had gripped the nation, setting a benchmark for jurisdictions around the world with one of the toughest regulations targeting Big Tech. The law forces tech giants, ranging from Instagram and Facebook owner Meta to TikTok, to stop minors logging in to their services or face fines of up to A$49.5 million (US$32 million). A trial enforcement period will start in January, with the law expected to take effect in November 2025.
