Writer Yang Jun has been given a suspended death sentence for espionage in China, according to Canberra. It is one of the harshest sentences Beijing is known to have handed down for spying charges in recent years. Also known as Yang Hengjun, the writer is a Chinese-born Australian citizen. The former diplomat was arrested in China in 2019 on espionage charges, but Chinese authorities have not announced a verdict or released details of the case. Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong said Canberra will be communicating its response “in the strongest terms”.
