All six of Australia's states have rejected a referendum that would have given greater political rights to indigenous people. Results of the poll were acknowledged by the prime minister on October 14, 2023. The referendum had aimed to amend the constitution to recognise First Nations people and create a body for them to advise the government. Failure to pass the legislation is seen as a major setback for national efforts toward indigenous reconciliation.
