Britain’s King Charles was berated by an indigenous senator on October 21, 2024, during his first visit to Australia since assuming the throne. “This is not your land. You are not my king,” shouted independent senator Lidia Thorpe. She was escorted out of a parliamentary reception for the royal couple after shouting that British colonisers had destroyed the land and stolen the bones of indigenous people. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also told Charles it was time for the monarch’s role as the nation’s head of state to end.
