Former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra will be prosecuted for insulting the monarchy over comments he made almost a decade ago. The Thai attorney general's office announced plans to indict Thaksin on May 29, 2024. The former leader faces 15 years in prison for allegedly violating the country’s tough lèse-majesté law, which bans “defaming, insulting or threatening” members of the royal family.
