Sixteen undernourished Asiatic black bear cubs have been found in a home in the Laotian capital Vientiane by a conservation charity on March 19, 2024, in what was the largest rescue of the year. Moon bears, as they are also known due to the crescent moon-shape on their chest, are classified as vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of endangered species. Thousands are kept as pets or farmed to extract their bile in the region for use in costly traditional medicine.
