A sudden US foreign aid freeze has severely curtailed efforts to clear mines and munitions from parts of the Mekong region that were blanket-bombed by American forces during the Vietnam war. Cambodia is among the nations that remain littered with unexploded bombs that have killed tens of thousands of people since fighting in the country ended in 1998. US President Donald Trump ordered a pause on foreign aid soon after he returned to office on January 20, 2025. The decision has led to skilled deminers losing jobs and rural populations exposed to increased risks of injury from unexploded ordnance (UXOs).
