An annual water buffalo race took place in the eastern Thai province of Chonburi on August 6, 2023. Held to celebrate the start of rice cultivation season, the race aims to preserve traditional Thai culture and educate the younger generation to appreciate these beasts of burden. Held to usher in the start of the rainy season, this year’s race came amid an impending drought brought on by the El Nino climate phenomenon.
