Japan’s Princess Mako finally marries commoner boyfriend Kei Komuro, leaving Imperial family

Japan’s Princess Mako finally married her university sweetheart Kei Komuro on October 26, 2021, after years of controversy surrounding Komuro’s family’s alleged financial difficulties. The marriage was a low-key affair involving no elaborate ceremony, officiated on paper. Under the Imperial House Law, Princess Mako loses her title after marrying a commoner. She also turned down the150 million yen (US$1.3 million) payout traditionally given to departing royals. The couple are expected to move to New York following their wedding.
