Scientists have discovered a new species of ancient whale, the Perucetus colossus, which lived around 40 million years ago. The fossils of the animal were found in a desert on the southern coast of Peru. The estimated weight of the Perucetus colossus ranges from 85 to 340 tonnes, surpassing the modern blue whale, which has long been considered the largest and heaviest animal ever.
