Plans for breakaway European Super League plunges football in Europe into crisis

Plans for a new football competition in Europe were announced on April 19, 2021, as 12 of Europe’s most powerful football clubs prepared to join a breakaway European Super League. The clubs are expected to leave the Uefa Champions League and start their own competition "as soon as possible". Three additional founding members are expected to join and five other clubs plan to earn the right to compete annually. The new league threatens to completely shake up European football to its core, and leaves the world's biggest sport and the prestigious Champions League facing an uncertain future. The announcement, not surprisingly, has sparked fierce reaction from fans.
