Tokyo welcomed the beginning of the Paralympics on August 24, 2021, with fireworks. Organisers said the opening ceremony at the Olympic Stadium was attended by about 3,400 members of team delegations, other guests of honour and members of the media. But no spectators were allowed inside as part of Japan’s efforts to control the spread of the coronavirus. As the nation struggles with its worst Covid-19 case surge of the pandemic, a record 4,403 athletes from 162 teams are competing in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, which will run from August 24 until September 5.
