Scores of protesters moved back into an area near Hong Kong's government headquarters on Thursday, June 13, 2019, one day after violent clashes between tens of thousands of demonstrators and police.
On Wednesday, police used pepper spray, tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the group protesting against the government’s contentious extradition bill. The protest was declared a riot, and the violence forced lawmakers to delay a planned second reading of the bill.
Protesters remain determined to prevent the bill from becoming law, saying they fear it could open the door to extraditions of fugitives to the Chinese mainland where they would not receive fair trials.
