Rescue under way after strong 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit China-Kyrgyzstan border

A 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck Wushi county in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region on January 23, 2024. The quake’s epicentre in Uchturpan county has been recording temperatures well below zero, with lows of up to -18°C (-0.4°F). State media said the area within 20km (12 miles) of the epicentre was sparsely populated. The quake left at least two people injured, damaged some homes and downed power lines. Tremors were felt as far away as neighbouring countries Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan.
