At least 126 confirmed dead after earthquake in China’s Tibet autonomous region

The death toll from a magnitude 6.8 earthquake in western China’s Tibet autonomous region continued to rise, with at least 126 confirmed dead and scores more injured as of January 8, 2025. The epicentre of the earthquake, which hit just after 9am on January 7, was in the county of Tingri near the city of Xigaze – also known as Shigatse – according to the China Earthquake Networks Centre. Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for “all efforts” to be made to carry out searches and rescues, and to “minimise casualties.”
