Survivors of a powerful magnitude 6.3 earthquake scrambled to find loved ones inside the ruins of their homes after the quake and aftershocks levelled villages near the western Afghan city of Herat. More than 1,000 people have been killed according to a United Nations estimate issued October 9, 2023. Taliban officials say the toll is far higher, estimating more than 2,400 people have been killed.
