Chinese reluctant to have children as China reports first population fall in 61 years

China’s population has fallen for the first time in 61 years. New data released by China’s National Bureau of Statistics on January 17, 2023, showed that the country’s overall population decreased by 850,000 in 2022, with the national birth rate falling to a record low. Amid the decrease in the country’s population, however, couples remain reluctant to have more children.
