Macau has closed its first landmark casino since the Covid-19 pandemic began in 2020. The Grand Lisboa, one of the city’s most prestigious casinos, was shuttered on July 7, 2022, after 13 employees tested positive for Covid-19. The world’s largest gambling hub has been battling to curb the rapidly spreading Omicron coronavirus variant, with 89 new cases of Covid-19 recorded in Macau on July 7, the highest number recorded in the city. In line with China’s zero-Covid policy, Macau plans to conduct a sixth round of citywide mass testing.
