Chinese President Xi Jinping laid down his expectations for Macau on December 19, 2024, during a visit to the city to swear in its next leader. Xi called on Macau to avoid complacency, strive to attract a broad range of talent and play a bigger role on the international stage. At the same time, Xi praised the city for the orderly development of its gaming industry – now the biggest in the world. The president has been in Macau to mark the 25th anniversary of the former Portuguese colony’s return to Chinese rule.
