China’s National People’s Congress (NPC) has passed a resolution on March 11, 2021 – the last day of the legislature’s annual meeting in Beijing. The measure approved in a near-unanimous vote will drastically overhaul Hong Kong’s electoral system to ensure only “patriots” can rule the city. It is considered the biggest shake-up of Hong Kong’s electoral system since the former British colony was handed back to China rule in 1997.
